Wall Coatings vs Wall Rendering

If your home’s exterior looks tired, cracked or weather-worn, you might be thinking about giving it a fresh new look.

Wall Coatings or Wall Rendering?

Two popular options for protecting and improving your walls are wall rendering and wall coatings. But what’s the difference between them, and which one is right for your home?

Let’s take a look at both options in a little more detail…

What Is Wall Rendering?

Wall rendering is a traditional method of applying a mix of sand, cement, lime, and water to your home’s exterior walls. It’s usually applied in one or two layers and gives your property a smooth or textured finish. Once dry, cement rendering can be painted to give it colour and added protection, while Monocouche rendering is already pigmentated with colour, so there is no need to paint the walls

Rendering does offer a smart new look, but it’s worth noting that it doesn’t provide as much long-term weatherproofing as a wall coating – unless it’s regularly maintained and repainted.

What Are Wall Coatings?

Wall coatings are specially formulated protective finishes applied directly to the exterior of your home.

They usually include high-performance resins, weatherproofing agents, and breathable materials that look great but also help protect your home for years to come.

Unlike render, wall coatings are designed to seal and shield your property from the elements – including rain, frost, UV rays and pollution – all while allowing the walls underneath to breathe.

And they’re available in a range long-lasting colours, so no repainting is needed for roughly 15 years.

So, What’s the Big Difference?

Here’s a quick side-by-side comparison:

Why We Recommend Wall Coatings

At The Home Improvement Project, we believe wall coatings offer the best all-round protection and finish for homes across the UK – especially if you want something that’s low maintenance, long-lasting, and looks fantastic year after year.

Whether you're dealing with pebbledash, brick, render or stone, a high-quality wall coating can completely transform the look of your home while adding an extra layer of protection.

They can also help reduce heat loss through your walls, making your home warmer and helping to prevent damp penetration.

Iron Staining Disclaimer: Rust staining or Iron staining is a natural problem that can occur when specific individual stones within the product that have high iron content are exposed to the environment. This problem is often increased if the site is in an exposed or coastal region. It is not unusual for the problem to take a number of years to be exposed and there is no way of identifying if the aggregate is affected prior to application.

It is not possible to screen the iron content out of the product by using magnets as it is part of the chemical makeup of the aggregate. The aggregates affected by this problem are mostly flint or gravel based type products or aggregates that have usually been quarried from glacial or river deposits. Using Calcined flint aggregates will not eliminate this problem if the raw flint used already has high iron content.

Given that iron staining is a natural occurrence no guarantee can be given or liability accepted for areas affected by iron staining. Since 2016 The Home Improvement Project have only selected aggregates from quarries that have proven records of low iron content. Whilst iron staining can cosmetically spoil the appearance of the affected areas it has no detrimental effect on the render itself.
